Do you love to sing a cappella?

BOOK YOUR AUDITION TODAY!
Harmonic Generation will be holding its annual auditions on Saturday, September 7, 2024 to recruit new singers to join our mixed, contemporary a cappella group here in Ottawa!

We’re looking talented, committed singers in all vocal ranges (bass, baritone, tenor, alto, mezzo, soprano), as well as those with skills in vocal percussion.  If you're interested, please read on, or pass on to others who you think might be great for our group!

How to prepare for your audition:
  • We know that auditions can sometimes be stressful, but we try to keep things casual and as stress free as possible
  • Please come to your audition ready to sing us a song of your choice (a verse and a chorus at a minimum - and a cappella of course!).
  • Your selection should really show off your range, musicality, and any other vocal talents you may have. If you are able to beatbox, let us know and show us your stuff!
  • Your audition may also include a variety of exercises to measure your upper and lower range, test your pitch and ear training, assess your ability to read music (see notes in FAQ below), etc.
Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of songs do you perform?
We have a wide-ranging repertoire that includes songs by Pentatonix, Adele, Portugal. The Man, the Beatles, Coldplay, Electric Light Orchestra, David Archuleta, Queen, Abba, Sarah Bareilles, Imogen Heap, Michael Jackson, and Billy Joel, just to name a few!  Check us out on Youtube to get a sense of the type of arrangements we perform.
How does the group learn new arrangements?
Members are provided access to sheet music and midi files to assist with their independent learning of individual parts at home, and rehearsals are used to focus on blending and balancing parts together, as well as other performance considerations.

Do I need to be able to read music?
There are varying levels of sight-reading ability within the group; however, some basic skills in reading music, and knowledge of notation, intervals, terminology, etc. is important for learning your part on your own and rehearsing with the group.

How many singers are you looking for?

We don't have a set number of singers that we are looking for at this time. HG is a sixteen-voice ensemble, and we have a core group of singers already in place with a few slots to fill.   We are always interested in meeting new, talented singers that could be a good fit for our group - either this year or in the in the future.

When and where are rehearsals?
Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings, from 8-10pm, at a rehearsal space in Nepean that has parking available and is accessible by public transit.

Are there COVID protocols in place that members are required to observe?
When we resumed rehearsals in 2022, strict protocols were put in place, aspects of which have been relaxed over recent months.  Should the need arise, these may be reintroduced to ensure the safety of our members, their families, and those who attend our performances.

I have another question about auditions that isn't listed here...
We would be more than happy to answer any other questions you may have about the audition process or the group - just send us an email at auditions@harmonicgeneration.ca
